October 18, 2011

SwitzerRebecca Dell, a Ph.D. student studying with Professor Carl Wunsch in Physical Oceanography in the MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Joint Program, has achieved the high honor of being selected as a Switzer Environmental Fellow by the Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation.  Dell’s research focuses on mixing in the deep ocean, and its importance for understanding the energetics of ocean circulation.  Her research has taken her to sea on two research cruises, both of which featured hurricane-force winds. Outside of her research, she has a strong interest in climate and energy policy, and is one of the lead organizers of the 3000-member MIT Energy Club. She was the MIT student delegate to the UN climate convention meeting in Cancun, Mexico, in December 2010. She also loves to sail and has a black belt in Taekwon Do.

The Switzer Foundation awarded 20 fellowships for emerging environmental leaders who are pursuing graduate degrees and are dedicated to positive environmental change in their careers.
