Allen Lin

Allen Lin ’11, MEng ’11 named Marshall Scholar

Allen Lin ’11, MEng ’11 has received a prestigious Marshall Scholarship, which will support two years of graduate study in the United Kingdom. A native of Holmdel, N.J., Lin joins 63 previous MIT-affiliated Marshall Scholars, according to the Institute’s Distinguished Fellowships office. The scholarships have been awarded by the British government since 1953 as a national gesture of thanks to the United States for aid received under the post-World War II Marshall Plan. Up to 40 American students are selected each year for graduate study at British institutions. Read the MIT News article.

Sloan Moms and Dads

Moms and Dads Join Forces for New Club

When Esther Faust, MBA ’12, raised her hand at AdMIT weekend and asked what resources exist for parents at MIT Sloan, she didn’t receive much of an answer. But Faust imagined an outlet that would capitalize on the unique needs of parents in the MIT Sloan community. “I wasn’t looking for a shopping spree to the outlets or drinks after work,” Faust said. Workshop

IAP Workshop for International Teaching Assistants

Enrollment is open now through December 5 for the IAP Workshop in Strategies for Effective Teaching (21F.217). This workshop offers a 5-day mini-module for international Teaching Assistants, emphasizing practical skills and participation. There are individualized programs to meet different needs.  Students are expected to attend all sessions. Participants will be chosen by departmental lottery. Residential Life seeks Graduate Resident Tutors for 2012-2013

The Residential Life Programs office has begun the process of recruiting and selecting Graduate Resident Tutors for MIT’s undergraduate residential communities for the 2012-2013 academic year.  GRTs play an integral role in the lives of our students and have the opportunity to make a positive impact on our community as a whole. International Engagements for Graduate Students

Graduate students Stand With Science!

DCA new effort by graduate students in the MIT Science Policy Initiative (SPI) involves reaching out to Congress’ Supercommittee to ask them to avoid science and R&D cuts in the upcoming budget deliberations. The Stand With Science initiative urges researchers nationwide to make their voices heard by this November 21, when SPI will submit their petition. SPI is changing how scientists and engineers at MIT engage with policy-makers and the public. They educate scientists and engineers in the policies governing science research and innovation, explore how science and engineering can inform policy decisions, support and facilitate direct engagement in the science policy arena for MIT students and researchers. BWA Trailblazer Dinner Series featuring Dean Blanche Staton

Blanche-StatonThe MIT Black Women’s Alliance (BWA) featured Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Education, Blanche Staton at their “Trailblazer Dinner” on November 7th, 2011. Dean Staton is passionate about mentorship and higher education and has reached out to women and under-represented minorty graduate students, for example through the creation of “Path of Professorship.” This year BWA is focusing on building community, in particular strength and empowerment at the Institute and fostering a strong community of support and guidance through daily life as an MIT student. The BWA gathers resources and reach out the young minority women of the Boston/Cambridge area as mentors educating them about women in science and engineering and how they can pursue all of their dreams with the right education.

Welcome to the 2011-2012 Knight Science Journalism Fellows

Knight3The MIT Knight Science Journalism Fellows are outstanding self-motivated journalists from the U.S. and around the world who aim to improve their coverage of science, technology, medicine or the environment. Knight Fellows spent nine months of in-depth study and devise their own curriculum, auditing courses at MIT and Harvard, attending lectures and colloquia, and interviewing faculty members. Fellows receive a stipend of $65,000 plus tuition and benefits. Meet the 2011-2012 fellows here.

Incoming graduate students list top factors for enrolling at MIT

Every two years, MIT surveys incoming graduate students to ask about their reasons for pursuing graduate study at MIT, expectations about their program and what they think they will do after they graduate. When asked why they enrolled at MIT, the most highly rated factor for master’s students was “MIT’s reputation,” with 84 percent listing it as “extremely important.” For doctoral students, “areas of specialization” was the most highly rated, with 73 percent listing it as “extremely important.” Read the full post by Lydia Snover, Director of MIT Institutional Research.
