Innovative tailor-made experiences for students: March 19

On Monday, March 19th, the Office of the Dean for Graduate Education will sponsor a talk on European science and research education by Professor Hans van Himbergen. Please join us from 9:30-11am in the Emma Rogers Room (10-340). Professor Hans van Himbergen is Deputy-Rector of International Educational Affairs at Utrecht University in the Netherlands and represents Utrecht University in the League of European Research Universities (LERU). He is a theoretical physicist and was chair of the department of Physics and Astronomy before taking office as Dean of University College Utrecht from 2003-2008. Dr. van Himbergen’s presentation will include:

(1) Doctoral Education and Career Development focusing on activities within the League of European Research Universities (LERU);
(2) The introduction of distinct cycles of undergraduate and graduate education in the Bologna process: current status after 10 years, trends and challenges;
(3) Junior College Utrecht (JCU): 30 regional high schools and Utrecht University pioneering new ways of cooperation in science in order to promote excellence in science education in Dutch high schools and novel routes to university entrance in science.

Dr. van Himbergen will discuss the drive towards promoting tailor-made education in small scale settings going beyond the traditional emphasis on acquiring knowledge and meeting strictly academic requirements.
