Biography

I am a senior majoring in Physics at Florida International University with a minor in Astronomy. I am originally from Cuba, currently living in Miami, FL. My research interests lie in the fields of nuclear physics and nuclear engineering. I am especially interested in nuclear power, which I believe to be an essential piece in meeting our growing population’s energy needs. Ultimately, I want to become a researcher and educator in these areas.

Abstract

Developing a Passive Decay Heat DRACS System for Fluoride Salt-Cooled High Temperature Reactors (FHR)

The Fluoride-salt-cooled High-temperature Reactor (FHR) is a new nuclear power reactor concept being investigated at MIT. The coolant is a liquid salt with a melting point of several hundred degrees C. After a reactor has been shut down, decay products continue to further decay and produce heat. In order to prevent overheating and equipment damage, a cooling system that keeps the temperatures in the reactor at safe levels is required. The system must remove heat rapidly when temperatures are high to avoid equipment damage and decrease heat removal when temperatures are low to avoid freezing of the salt and therefore, blocking the flow of liquid. A passive Direct Reactor Air Cooling System (DRACS) is proposed for this purpose. Five different designs of the FHR DRACS air heat exchanger consisting of two-concentric tubes with hot coolant in the inner tube and different mechanisms in the outer tube were considered to accomplish this.  This poster explains the mechanism of each design.
