Biography

My name is Ashley Hartwell and I’m entering my second year of graduate school at MIT in the Mechanical Engineering Department. I’m originally from Chicago, IL but I did my undergrad at Stanford University where I majored in Mechanical Engineering. During my undergrad I did research in civil engineering studying concrete composite materials, was active on the executive board of our NSBE chapter and was president of my sorority Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Omicron Chi Chapter. Since coming to MIT I’ve joined the Schuh Group in the Department of Material Science and Engineering where I study Shape Memory alloys for use as actuators and the relationship between material processing of these alloys and their resulting properties. In my spare time I can be found at ballet or cycling class and saving memes on twitter for posterity. My goals are to pursue my Ph.D and to become a professor someday.
